Am I a bad person for not particularly liking small, yappy dogs? I love animals, it's just that small, yappy dogs are small, yappy dogs...
I'm confident enough to say that most animals LOVE me.
Horses, (real) dogs, cats, birds, strange animals at the zoo, anacondas...
But for some reason, my boyfriend's mother's 2 rat terriers and 1 Chihuahua bark EVERY TIME I walk in the door. Scratch that. Every time ANYONE walks in the door. Then, they start barking at each other because they get pissed that they're barking. Yuck. (And I'm afraid to show any appearance of not liking them because she calls them her "kids." Her Kryptonite is anyone who is very obvious about liking her dogs.)
P.S. Did you know that in Chihuahua, Mexico, Chihuahuas run wild in packs of up to 50?? YAP YAP YAP YAP YAP!! (X50)

If you're bad I'm more bad because I (teasingly, almost) refer to dogs shorter than knee-high as "pitiful wastes of dog-flesh". :)

We have a rat terrier and 2 beagles. None of them really bark unless there is something to bark about. Also, our rat terrier doesnt have one of those annoying barks. Its possible that maybe the dogs sense you don't like them and in return they don't like you.
They can definitely sense that I'm irritated, which is why I think they start barking at each other. It's like they're saying "shut up! shut up! shut up!" and the larger rat terrier will run over to the Chihuahua and nip at her. While they are trained, to sit and do cute tricks, they are very spoiled. My best friend has a jack russle terrier that is completely untrained. He barks, scratches, and pees EVERYWHERE.
I have no problem with beagles. While they might howl, it is much more attractive that YIP YIP YIP! And they are so gosh darn cute! My mom has a Dachshund. He is the SWEETEST dog I've ever met, and by far my favorite animal. If he EVER does something bad you can tell he feels bad about it, he only barks at the mailman or skunks, and he's just so polite. Everybody is instantly in love with him. I'm sure it's just how the animal is raised. Like your rat terrier for instance. You most likely spent time and discipline on the little guy while he was growing up. That stuff matters. Thank you for not raising yappy dogs. Small, sweet dogs can be the cutest things in the world :o)
I love animals so much, but there is just something about those nasty little dogs that makes me want to start kicking. Those sharp little teeth, perfect for nipping ankles and children's noses, the snarling that people think is cute because they're so small, the incessant yapping...Ugh. Hate 'em. Give me Great Dane or a Lab any day.
AGH I am a large dog lover too. It's depressing that they don't live as long. My favorites are Alaskan Malamutes, English Setters, Mastiffs, Saint Bernards, and Wolfdogs. AWWW! Anything I can really play with, rough house with, and feel protected. A real friend. Not a baby.
The little dogs get like that because of the way they are babied by the owners.
On the Dog Whisperer , Cesar has mellowed out the littleyappynoisyannyingratdogs and made them normal.
Start treating them like Cesar does and see if it stops them. When the Mother of boyfreind yaps , do the same to her.
awww a stampede of little snuggly dogs that probably have rabies!
